A SIMBOLIC LANGUAGE OF K-POP FANDOM: THE MEANING OF EMOTICONS ON PLATFORM X (TWITTER)
Abstract
This study explores the use of emoticons by Carat, the fandom of SEVENTEEN, on platform X. Emoticons are interpreted as semiotic signs that represent cultural identity and reinforce social solidarity. The research examines how emoticons function as semiotic signs through the relationship between representamen, object, and interpretant in Peirce’s theory. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study analyzes public posts and replies containing emoticons related to idols and fandom. The findings reveal that the fandom’s emoticons are classified into icons (7 emoticons) and symbols (5 emoticons). In terms of objects, 13 emoticons operate as immediate and dynamic objects. For interpretants, 13 function as immediate interpretants, 3 as dynamic interpretants, and 1 as a final interpretant. These results show that emoticons in the Carat community are not merely visual expressions but semiotic constructions that convey collective values, strengthen solidarity, and mark cultural identity in digital communication
